Spotlight on Early Childhood at the Akron Civic Theatre

Summit Education Initiative distributed the following press release on Oct. 14, 2016.

Last week we welcomed the New Year, but we still have another reason to celebrate this month.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, Summit Education Initiative (SEI), along with Child Care Connection, State Support Team Region 8 and Summit County First Things First, is hosting a special event for preschool directors and staff, elementary principals, kindergarten teachers and others working with preschool- and kindergarten-aged children in Summit County.early childhood

In the splendor of the historic Akron Civic Theatre, early childhood professionals will celebrate the successes of the Transition Skills Summary (TSS), a snapshot of a child’s readiness for kindergarten using 47 key developmental skills within five domains. Part of the Summit County First Things First initiative, the TSS indicates what a child needs to accomplish before entering kindergarten to ensure they are ready for success. SEI provides infrastructure and technical support to preschools and child care centers that participate in the TSS.

“We will share how kindergarten programs are using the TSS information in valuable ways and explain how individuals may get involved with other school readiness efforts in their communities,” said Laura DiCola, early childhood strategy leader at SEI. “Attendees will also have the opportunity to register their sites for the TSS and ask for registration assistance during the event.”

The TSS Kick-Off is the first event of its kind in Summit County, at which preschools and child care centers have the opportunity to directly connect with the school districts their students ultimately attend.

“We hope attendees experience the TSS’s energy and potential, which many of the organizations we’ve invited have helped us build,” said Derran Wimer, executive director of SEI. “Many schools and their staff have contributed to TSS success over the past six years, and we want the TSS Kick-Off event to show our gratitude for their support.”

Schools who have participated in the TSS and those from Summit County who have not participated are invited to attend the TSS Kick-Off – a free event. (You may view the agenda here.) Registration ends after Friday, Jan. 13.
